Basterrechea 3rd in Decathlon after Day 1 at NAIA Meet

GULF SHORES, Ala. - College of Idaho senior Austin Basterrechea won the high jump, one of three Top-3 finishes, helping him sit in third-place after Day 1 of the decathlon at the NAIA Track & Field National Championships.

Basterrechea logged 3,713 points on Day 1, sitting behind leader Kale Wolken (3,922) of Doane and Atsu Nyamadi (3,848) of Wiley.

The 2013 All-American recorded a season-best mark of 6-7 to win the high jump; winning his heat of the 400-meters (49.92), recording the third-fastest time of the 16 competitors; while placing third in the long jump (22-8).  Basterrechea also ran a solid time of 11.75 in the 100-meters and tossed the shot put 38-5.

C of I senior Nick Hampton also qualified for the final in the 1,500-meters, finishing seventh in the second preliminary heat.  Hampton clocked a time of 3:53.66, the 11th of 12 competitors that will race on Saturday. 

Teammate Sean Saxton failed to make the final, placing ninth in the first heat with a time of 3:55.45.

On Friday, Basterrechea begins Day 2 of the decathlon with the 110-meter hurdles at 8:30 a.m., while Hampton will compete in the preliminaries of the 800-meters.
