CALDWELL, Idaho – Sydney Woods headed home a corner kick from sister Hailey Woods in the 65th minute, lifting the College of Idaho to a stunning 1-0 victory over No. 1 ranked Concordia University, 1-0, at Simplot Stadium.
The Lady Yotes (5-3-2, 2-0-1 CCC) remained unbeaten in Cascade Conference play – picking up their first win over the defending NAIA national champions since 2009.
After winning their only corner kick of the match, the younger Woods played a high ball into the middle of the six-yard box, finding her older sister – who headed the ball into the left corner of the net.
C of I withstood an onslaught in the final 20 minutes by the Cavaliers (10-1-1, 3-1), as CU put five shots on frame, all stopped by freshman keeper Brittany Houghton. Houghton made a diving stop of a low Ariel Kanable drive in the 77th minute, then punched a Kanable free kick over the crossbar in the 85th minute. The Cavs had a final chance inside the last minute, but Ashley Ames right-footer from inside the area was stopped by Houghton.
CU had a great chance in the opening minute of play, as a cross just inside the box found Kanable, but her drive just missed above the bar. C of I had two chances to take the lead in the opening half – as a header in the 13th minute by an unmarked Jamiece Yizar off an Erika Thompson cross, just missed, with a through-ball by Bri Blair in the 24th minute finding the foot of Katelyn Benavidez, but her low just was just wide of the left post.
The Cavaliers held a 24-8 edge in shots, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal – with Houghton making six saves in the second half. CU also held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
C of I hits the road next weekend for matches at Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon.
NOTES: The loss for Concordia ended a 29-match streak without a loss (28-0-1) and the first time they have been shutout in 32 matches (since a 0-0 draw with Westmont on Aug. 30, 2013)…it was just the second match this season CU has trailed – trailed 1-0 and 2-1 (over a 35 minute stretch), before rallying for a 3-2 victory over The Masters.
